We made an evening visit to the neighborhood of Banksville. Liddy was invited to speak at an interfaith thanksgiving dinner at the Turkish Cultural Center on Crane Avenue; our friends there shared their delicious baklava and lots of warm feelings.

Before the event we stopped in at the local Eat’n Park to share a strawberry milkshake. Eat’n Park is a classic Pittsburgh regional dinner chain noted for its signature smiley cookies. Banksville is located on the city border sharing many characteristics with its neighbor, Green Tree. It has a suburban feel with large lots for each home. It’s also far less walkable than other neighborhoods we’ve visited, with some streets lacking sidewalks. Banksville is home to Pittsburgh’s two largest garden apartment complexes, which consist of open green space and smaller buildings. Other sights include Banksville Park and Banksville Elementary School.

Fun Fact:
The Little Saw Mill Run Railroad opened in 1853, moving 150,000 tons of coal each year from Banksville to Temperanceville (now West End). It also offered passenger service, in a single unpowered car that coasted down the hill.
