A neighborhood close to home made for a lovely walking excursion. We walked over to Bakery Square to run a few errands, including getting some new shoes at Fleet Feet. Bakery Square, now a development that include shopping, offices, and apartments, was originally home to a Nabisco factory from 1918 to 1998. For our ice cream we headed to Jeni’s, a Columbus-based chain which had some our favorite flavors so far. Pippa enjoyed Caramel Apple Crumble and Brambleberry Crisp, Edmund and Greg both went with Burnt Orange Dreamsicle and Milkiest Chocolate, and Liddy had Miso Butterscotch Brownie. After throughly enjoying our cones, we crossed under the railroad tracks and walked back through the center of Larimer. Larimer hosted a large Italian population for the first half of the 20th century. The ’60s brought movement to the suburbs and eventually to the closing (and ultimate demolition) of historic Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. Today the neighborhood is predominantly African American. It’s home to The Kingsley Association, a community fitness center, which we joined as members in December.

Fun Fact:
Liddy pastored a church in the Westmoreland County village of Larimer. Both the village and the neighborhood are named for William Larimer, a wealthy railroad entrepreneur. After owning land that eventually became this neighborhood, he moved west and founded Denver, Colorado.

Love this quest. Ice cream is my favorite food group. I’ll be following along.

What does brambleberey even taste like? I’m so intrigued.

The ice cream was very pie forward, but super delicious. Pretty comparable to a blackberry, but whimsical!

I did not know that about Mr. Larimer. Cool fact.
