Continuing our effort to visit daytime-only locations before the start of the school year, we drove to Homewood South to check out Sandy Boo’s Delights at Dana’s Bakery. Outside the bakery, established in 1979 and full of delicious-looking baked goods, is Sandy Boo’s, an Italian ice stand. After a nice conversation with the people working there, we grabbed cups of reasonably priced, refreshing Philadelphia water ice. Pippa had watermelon and Edmund and Liddy had mango. We also took a walk through the neighborhood, seeing the Carnegie library, YMCA, ornate Holy Rosary Church (currently for sale), and many brightly-colored murals. Homewood South has the largest business district of the three neighborhoods that make up Homewood; we’ll catch Homewoods North and West on a future visit.
Fun Fact:
Homewood’s Community Plan is based on the Nguzo Saba, the seven principles of African heritage: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith).
