Never mind the fact that we’re posting this two months late: it’s time for the third and final post from our twelve-mile hike across Pittsburgh! We were tired but ice cream is always a great solution. As we walked into Allegheny West, we noticed a clear divide from its bordering neighborhoods in vibe and architectural style. The smallest of the 90 neighborhoods, Allegheny West features a pleasant business district and Allegheny City’s historic mansion district. Our ice cream destination, Happy Day Dessert Factory, had lots of delicious fruit flavors. Pippa had apple pie, Edmund had strawberry banana, and Greg had chocolate banana. After enjoying our cones and some much needed water, we took a walk through the mansions that make up the architecture of Allegheny West. We also saw much of the campus of CCAC, the local community college, that uses many historical buildings to hold its classrooms and offices.

Fun Fact:
One mansion in Allegheny West is the childhood home of Gertrude Stein, a famous writer and poet. She lived from 1874 to 1946, spending much of her life in Paris. She was born in Allegheny City before it was a part of Pittsburgh, though the family moved away when she was three.
