On a muggy, humid Wednesday night, Edmund and Liddy took a walk to Moonlit Burgers on Penn Avenue. While our original intention was simply to have burgers for dinner, we realized that the addition of milkshakes made this a 90 Cones-worthy excursion.

We were excited to find our friend Eric tending bar. He prepared a delicious Strawberry Shortcake milkshake for Edmund and a boozy Vanilla Bourbon milkshake for Liddy, both prepared using Millie’s soft serve (making this Millie’s fourth appearance in this blog). Thanks, Eric!

After dinner, we walked up North Aiken Avenue, climbing the steep hill that characterizes this neighborhood. Garfield is one of the neighborhoods nearest our house, and it’s home to many favorite restaurants, such as People’s Indian and the late great Pho Minh, as well as our polling place, Valley View Presbyterian Church. While a decidedly urban neighborhood, Garfield is also surprisingly agricultural, featuring Garfield Community Farm and many community gardens. Having experienced hard times through poor urban planning in the 1960s and 70s, Garfield is making a real effort today to encourage small, artsy businesses and to diversify its housing supply while resisting gentrification.

Fun Fact:
The first lot sold in Garfield was purchased in 1881 on the day of President James Garfield’s funeral; its buyer chose to name the neighborhood in his honor.
