Enjoying the fall weather, we took a long walk over to Homewood West. We walked from our house, passing two Sunoco gas stations before reaching our destination: a third Sunoco gas station! There we grabbed Blue Bunny treats. Liddy and Edmund had cookie ice cream sandwiches and Pippa had a cookies and cream ice cream bar.

Homewood West is home to lots of wildlife enjoying the empty lots, including deer, bunnies, and wandering house-cats. For the less wild animals, the Humane Animal Rescue offers refuge; as a first grader, Pippa completed a service project here.

The neighborhood’s Westinghouse High School is a very impressive facility with many distinguished alumni, including notable jazz musicians Billy Strayhorn and Mary Lou Williams. Homewood West also has a YWCA with offers pre-K and summer camps.

Fun Fact:
Westinghouse High School graduate Chuck Cooper was the first Black player drafted to the NBA. In responce to racist criticism, the Celtics owner said “I don’t give a damn if he’s striped, plaid or polka dot. Boston takes Charles Cooper of Duquesne.” After his basketball career, he returned to Pittsburgh and served on the school board and as director of parks and recreation.
