A full 30-minute drive (without traffic) from our home, at the extreme southeastern-most point of the city, surrounded on most sides by the suburbs of West Mifflin and Munhall, we discovered the neighborhood of Lincoln Place, which none of us had ever visited before. With Pippa’s godmothers in town visiting for the weekend, we grabbed ice cream all across the city including here at The Scoop on Mifflin Road in Lincoln Place. The Scoop features hard ice cream from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company in Wisconsin, plus assorted soft serves and an impressive menu of specialty sundaes (including a spaghetti and meatballs sundae that no one was brave enough to order). Pippa had cheesecake soft serve in a red velvet cone, and Edmund had salted caramel in a dark chocolate cone. Angela had vanilla soft serve with butterscotch topping, and Sandy had banana cream pie hard ice cream in a cup. Liddy had a waffle cone of orange dreamsicle, and Greg had a cake cone of peach. Portion sizes were big, filling, and delicious. After enjoying our ice cream, we drove by McBride Park, which is home to a small city pool, then saw Mifflin K-8 and spent some time on the swings at Lincoln Place Parklet.
Fun Fact:
Lincoln Place was home to one of Pittsburgh’s trolley parks between 1896 and 1906. Trolley parks were built by trolley companies to encourage ridership on the weekends. Lincoln Place’s Calhoun Park had a wooden roller coaster and a dance hall.
