Central Lawrenceville is home to a long-standing Memorial Day Parade, our family’s tradition for the start of summer. Greg and Edmund marched along with their Scouts BSA troop, and Pippa and Liddy met up with family friends Zoe and Peter. After taking in the bagpipes, Ghostbusters, and fiery tubas, we walked down to Allegheny Cemetery where we spotted the Millie’s truck and made an impromptu decision to count this for 90 Cones. Pippa enjoyed the Backyard S’mores and both Edmund and Liddy had Triple Cookie Caramel.

One of the three divisions of Lawrenceville (the Millie’s truck actually originates at the Lower Lawrenceville store of a previous 90 Cones visit), most of Central Lawrenceville’s land area is taken up by the cemetery. However, the neighborhood is also home to Children’s Hospital, a branch of the Carnegie Library, and a large business district that features many fun shops and restaurants.

Fun Fact:
Among the 124,000 people buried in Allegheny Cemetery are Ebenezer Denny, the first mayor of Pittsburgh; Stephen Foster, composer of “Camptown Races” and many other songs; baseball great Josh Gibson; Mabel Gillespie, who shared part of her fortune with Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania; and early woman journalist and abolitionist Jane Swisshelm (more about her when we get to Swisshelm Park!).
